I've gotten a few e-mails lately
asking for details about the comics program at which I teach, and it's become
increasingly difficult to give each correspondent the properly thorough
response given that I write each one from scratch and that there's a lot to
talk about. I started to put it all into the Frequently Asked Questions section, but there's
so much information that it would've overwhelmed the page, and as I'm doing my
best to keep the site fairly Crogan Adventures-centric I didn't want to let
that happen. So I made this sub-page in which I'll include all the
information that I think might be pertinent to someone interested in studying
comics in college. Hope it's helpful!

I teach
comics (the major is called Sequential Art) at the Atlanta campus of the
Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Though SCAD started in Savannah, Georgia (hence the school’s
name) in 1978, the Atlanta campus is fairly new. It opened its doors to the public in 2005, and I began
graduate school here the following year.
The school is right in the middle of the city, and it was a nice change
of pace for me, moving from a small town to a place with loads of cultural
activities, a half-dozen comics shops, lots of animators and comic artists, and
an inexpensive airport from which I could easily travel to conventions.
I went
to grad school for a couple of reasons.
The first is that I wanted to teach, which I am now lucky enough to be
doing. My dad was a college
professor, and it was the half of my career of which I was always certain. What I would do practically, and
subsequently teach, changed a lot as I grew up, but ended up being exactly what
I’d most wanted to do as a kid.
And that’s the second reason.
When I decided that I wanted to be a cartoonist, I knew that I needed to
be trained for it, and after a lot of investigation decided that SCAD-Atlanta
was the place best suited to what I wanted to do, and what I wanted to learn.
I
thought it might be helpful to anyone considering studying comics in college to
explain a little bit about what we do and what we offer so that you can make an
informed decision as to whether or not our program is for you.
I do
want to note that this is my personal page, and is in no way affiliated with
SCAD itself. If you're looking for
